The Corps

The United States Marine Corps was established 245 years ago today when two battalions were formed by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia as a service branch of infantry troops capable of fighting both at sea and on shore. Future events would see them become the most formidable fighting force on the planet.

Captain Samuel Nicholas was nominated to lead the Marines by future president John Adams and, by tradition, is considered the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.
