Graceland is situated on what was once a 500-acre farm owned by the Toof family. It was named after Grace, one of S.C. Toof’s daughters and, in 1939, Grace’s niece, socialite Ruth Brown Moore (and her husband, Dr. Thomas Moore) built the mansion. Some 18 years later, a 22-year-old Elvis Presley purchased it for $102,500 (approximately $1.12 million today).

The 23-room, 10,000 sq. ft. residence occupied nearly 14 acres of the pastoral setting. The mansion was expanded another 7,500 sq. ft. prior to Elvis moving in (just after shooting Jailhouse Rock, his third movie) and would serve as his primary residence for the final 20 years of his life.
