From a bygone era

Vanderbilt was in Oxford tonight for a game against Ole Miss. The outcome was never in question, as is usually the case.

The numbers tell you these two schools enjoy a reasonably competitive rivalry that dates back to 1894, but much of the Commodores’ success resulted from dominating the pre-World War II era. In fact Vandy have claimed a modest 20 wins against the Rebels since the Axis powers’ unconditional surrender 78 years ago.

Still, when I wax poetic about the ambiance of this time — the pleasant coolness and all that comes with the changing season — I am reminded again and again that, despite present atrocities, the distinctiveness of college football in the Southland, with all its wonderful traditions, is never to be taken for granted.

And for this particular game in 1950, Ole Miss lost to the nationally ranked Commodores, 20-14.
