The Halfway House Cafe in Santa Clarita, California, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, is said to be where Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell walked in after ejecting from the (mostly fictitious) SR-72 Darkstar at Mach 10, or approximately 7,900 mph.

On a side note, NASA’s unmanned X-43A achieved Mach 10 after being drop launched from a B-52 Stratofortress in 2004. It was eventually replaced by the X-51A, which topped Mach 5 for over three minutes in 2013.
