Cats, Dawgs, a Godfather and a Prince

James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, recorded “Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs” in 1976. The following year he performed the song alongside the University of Georgia’s Dixie Redcoat Marching Band during halftime of UGA’s homecoming game against the Kentucky Wildcats.

England’s Prince Charles, who had recently addressed a special joint session of the Georgia General Assembly during his visit to Atlanta, was among those in attendance. Always the courteous hosts, some unruly fans spraypainted “Prince Charles Does It Doggy Style!!!” on a few sewn together bedsheets, which might’ve been instigated by Lewis Grizzard himself. The British prince was said to be less than amused by the prank.

Brown’s ode to the Bulldogs was never included on a studio album, but it eventually saw the light of day as part of a greatest hits collection released in 2011.

And Prince Charles hasn’t been back to Georgia since.
