I’d seen cropped versions of this picture before, and was unceasingly fascinated by it for some reason, but I never knew when or where the shot originated until I finally discovered that it was first published in an edition of LIFE magazine in 1951 as part of an article about the “tough-minded English gentlemen” of a then 569-year-old Winchester College in Hampshire near the coast of the English Channel.
