Because of widespread instability after leaving the Soviet Union in March 1990 (which ultimately dissolved on Christmas Day 1991), the squad were forced to rely upon outside funding to field a team, including a sponsorship from the Grateful Dead that resulted in some of the swankest uniforms in sports history.

Later dubbed “The Other Dream Team,” the underdog Lithuanians averaged an impressive 94 points per game (second only to the American Dream Team’s 117 ppg) en route to winning the bronze medal.
