Though billed from Oil Trough, Texas (not a real place), the pro wrestler who came to be known as Dutch Mantel was born and raised in South Carolina at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Wayne Keown, his given name, was conscripted into the Army after his first year at Clemson University when tensions in Vietnam were beginning to reach its apex. After serving with the 25th Infantry, Dutch found his way to the squared circle where he made his name as one of the biggest draws of rasslin’s territory heyday.

Younger enthusiasts might know him as Zeb Colter, part of a WWE gimmick Jack Swagger later referred to as “bad creative.” But for longtime fans, Dutch is perhaps best remembered for teaming with Jerry Lawler against Bill Dundee and Buddy Landel in March 1986 for a Texas Death Match at the Mid-South Coliseum that went a record 26 falls over more than an hour.
Dutch is an original. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
