Farewell to the “The Roaring Lion”

Sir Winston Churchill died on this day in 1965. The presence of Her Majesty the Queen at his State Funeral marked a departure from traditional protocol, which dictates that Monarchs do not attend non-Royal funerals.

The Queen’s presence was an honor that has been bestowed on only one other Prime Minister (Margaret Thatcher) and served as a fitting tribute to the man who all but stood alone as tyranny swept through Europe.
