Metallica played in Nagoya, Japan 35 years ago almost to the day. It was their only show of the Damage, Inc. Tour to reach the Asian continent. They returned in May 1989 to play six shows in four cities, including Nagoya, during their yearlong Damaged Justice Tour.

Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Dörarp, Sweden two months earlier during the European leg of their tour. Jason Newsted (standing, center) was tapped to replace him on bass the following month.

Jason remained with the band for nearly 15 years before parting in 2001. This time Metallica would take two years before deciding on Newsted’s replacement, who’s been in the band ever since.
