Diana, Princess of Wales, visited with a girl from Angola in 1997 whose leg had been lost due to a landmine during her country’s civil war.

Sandra Tigica, the girl pictured with Diana, is now a married mother of three and credits the Princess for working with the Red Cross to bring attention to the plight of her homeland, which at the time had the world’s highest rate of death and disability caused by landmines.
“Our country is much safer thanks to Princess Diana,” she said.
Diana herself died in Paris later that year in a car crash. She was just 36 years old.
