On June 14, 1777 Congress ordered a representative banner similar to the one flown by the Continental Army the previous year. It was flown for the first time by the Irish-born brigadier general William Maxwell during a skirmish in Delaware, 243 years ago today.

Ironically the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the war, was signed exactly six years later.
