Nirvana played the main stage of the Reading Festival at Little John’s Farm in Berkshire, England alongside Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. on August 23, 1991.

The video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the lead single from their first major label album, was filmed six days earlier at GMT Studios in Culver City, California. It aired on MTV for the first time on September 10.

Nevermind was released two weeks later. By January the album was selling 300,000 copies a week. The rest is history.
