On George Washington’s 248th birthday, some unknown college kids — over half of whom were born and raised Minnesota — defeated the unbeatable four-time defending gold medalist Soviet “Red Army,” 4-3, during the XIII Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York in what remains perhaps the greatest upset in sports history.

Team USA defeated Finland, 4-2, on February 24 to secure the gold.
