On this day in 1815

American and British soldiers clashed at the Battle of New Orleans in the current suburb of Chalmette, Louisiana.

Outnumbered by over 2,000 men, the Americans — led by Andrew Jackson and two Choctaw chiefs — defeated Maj. General Edward Pakenham’s British and indigenous Hitchiti troops.

Neither side realized their respective governments had signed a peace treaty that officially ended the War of 1812 some two weeks earlier on Christmas Eve.
