“Twilight in Gettysburg”

“Such was the love and veneration of the men for him that they came to look upon the cause as General Lee’s cause and they fought for it because they loved him. To them he represented cause, country, and all.” — Colonel Charles Marshall, aide de camp and assistant adjutant general to Robert E. Lee

After the war, Marshall delivered the dedication addresses for monuments to both Lee in Richmond, Virginia and Ulysses S. Grant in New York City.

Art by a well-known Jewish gentleman from Brooklyn, NYC named Mort Künstler
