Having removed the communist insignia from his headwear, an unknown soldier gives a victory sign after the Romanian revolution ended on Christmas Day 1989 — exactly two years prior to the Soviet flag being lowered from the Kremlin for the last time — whereupon General Secretary Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena were executed, ending 42 years of communist rule in Romania.
It was also the last removal of a Marxist-Leninist government in an Eastern Bloc country.
