“Mojo”

Mike Winchell and Chris Comer of Permian High School in Odessa, Texas — two of the people about whom H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 book “Friday Night Lights” was written.

Bissinger took a leave from The Philadelphia Inquirer to write about the school and community that encompassed the four-time Texas state champions. The resulting book became a bestseller that remains in print 30 years after its release.

It subsequently inspired a short-lived television series in 1993 called Against the Grain starring a young Ben Affleck. A movie version of the book (which claimed its share of creative license) followed in 2004, making over $60 million at the box office.

But perhaps most notable was the NBC series, also of the same name, that ran for five critically acclaimed seasons, ending in 2011.

The Panthers, for the record, fell short of expectations, going 12-3 for the ‘88 season on which the book was focused.

The next year, however, Permian High won their fifth Texas state championship and were declared national champions for the second time in school history.

Permian won its sixth Texas state championship in 1991 and finished runners-up four years later. But the Panthers, while competitive, have not returned to prominence since.
