From humble beginnings

The first Ultimate Fighting Championship was held at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado 27 years ago today.

Royce Gracie, whose father Hélio co-founded what’s commonly known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and whose brother Rorion co-founded the UFC, tore through each of his three opponents en route to winning the original tournament. Gracie would repeat his success in the second and fourth UFC tourneys as well.

He retired from mixed martial arts competition after defeating Ken Shamrock at Bellator 149 in February 2016, compiling a 15-2-3 overall record.

I’ve attended several of Royce’s seminars in years past. His cousin Rodrigo is also an excellent instructor. Anyone who’s curious should give it a try.
